General Education Checklist

The General Education Program (GEP) is a fundamental component of the baccalaurate degree in the state of Florida and at public universities across the country.  Regardless of the major you declare, you will be required to complete the GEP in order to graduate from FGCU.  There are a number of reasons why this requirement is included in your degree:

  • It ensures breadth of knowledge- to be fully educated, it is important that you experience a broad range of subject areas and have some understanding of the natural and physical world, the world of the arts, music, theater, and literature, and the realm of social, interpersonal, and political systems.
  • It allows for exploration and discovery- the GEP allows you to take courses in subject areas you never had a chance to learn about in high school, and this is a great way to explore the curriculum and discover academic areas that are interesting to you and exciting to study!
  • It develops important skills you need for the future - the GEP builds your skills in written and verbal communication, calcuation and data analysis, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and problem finding and problem solving, which are all vital skills for the courses you will take in your major...and that you will need in the world of work.
