Math Enrollment Information

Selecting the appropriate math course is based upon:

  • Your ACT/SAT Mathematics sub score;
  • Your major.

The ACT/SAT score determines a default course placement into a particular mathematics or statistics course, as seen in the chart below:

math score

New SAT math score

math score

MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra)

540 or below

560 or below

23 or below

MAC 1105/MGF 1106/MGF 1107/STA 2023 (General Education Math)

MAC 1147 (Pre-Calculus)

MAC 2233 (Elementary Calculus)

MAC 2311 (Calculus I)

During orientation, advisors will assist you in understanding your course placement and the course requirements for your major. While some students will be able to enroll directly into the course they need to complete degree requirements, others may need additional math courses beyond their default course placement.

"First Time in College" (freshmen) students whose ACT/SAT scores do not place them into the course(s) needed for their major may arrange to take a Mathematics Placement Test (MPT), to attempt to “test out” of their default course placement and take a higher level mathematics course.  Students can discuss this option with their advisor during Eagle View Orientation, and work with the Testing Service to register for this placement test.

NOTE: Taking the MPT cannot lower a student’s course placement – if the placement test score is below the student’s default course placement, they can still take the default course.

Students who may take a placement test should review the following information:

Learn about the Elementary Algebra and College Level Math exams

Prepare for Accuplacer exams with study applications and sample questions

  • Reference Elementary Algebra (EA) content if ACT math is 23 or below or if (new) SAT math is 560 or below, or if (old) SAT math is 540 or below.
  • Reference College Level Math (CLM) content if ACT math is 24 or higher or if (new) SAT math score is 570 or higher or if (old) SAT math is 550 or higher.

NOTE: Students can meet the mathematics course requirement(s) for their program of study through Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), or the College Level Examination Program (CLEP):

  • Students with college credit earned through Dual Enrollment (or earned after graduation from high school) should have official transcripts sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prior to attending Eagle View Orientation.
  • Students with accelerated credit in math through Advanced Placement (AP scores: 3-5), International Baccalaureate (IB scores: 4-7), Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE grades A-E), or College Level Examination Program (CLEP scores of 50+) should review FGCU course equivalencies and report these scores to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as soon as they are received.
