The Componenets of a Degree

The minimum number of credit hours (semester hours) needed to complete a Bachelors Degree in the state of Florida is 120. While some degree programs require more than 120 credit hours to complete the degree program (for example: nursing) as designated by the state, the minimum number of credits is 120.

Undergraduate Degrees can be thought of has having three primary components:

  • General Education Program (GEP) - designed to develop a set of core competencies needed by all graduates, the GEP consists of 36 credit hours that are broken down into five areas;
  • Major/College Requirements - this includes Common Prerequisites for the degree program, Common Core Courses for the college or school, Required Courses in the Major, and other coursework specified by the degree program;
  • Electives - this can include Restricted Electives designated by the degree program and Free Electives needed to complete the total number of credits required by the degree program.
