Peer Academic Leader (PAL) Position Description

The Center for Academic Achievement will select a group of undergraduate leaders to serve as mentors for the spring semester. The selected PALs will be assigned to an SLS 1501 - Effective Learning course to enrich the academic performance of mentees in and beyond the classroom. As a mentor, the PAL will facilitate the development of mentees' self-awareness as a means of both personal and academic success. The PAL is trained to provide guidance, resources, structure, and accountability for mentee students.

 

Selection Process Overview
Step 1: Thoroughly review selection process and application material

Confirm that all dates and times work for your schedule, and note if you have questions about the PAL position or selection process. Thoroughly review the PAL Information Packet and website for information on the qualities, duties, and qualifications of a PAL. The packet includes tentative orientation and training dates, application material, and general program information. 

 

Step 2: Complete the online application

The application is designed to better inform us about an applicant's background, work history, academic pursuits, and motivation for becoming a PAL. The application consists of seven parts: contact and general information, academic information, availability, short answer questions, University and community involvement, recommendations, FERPA waiver, and your confirmation and signature. Short answer questions: You will be asked to provide short paragraph answers (no more than 250 words) on four questions. We suggest you type your responses in a Word document to check for spelling and grammer, and then copy and paste the responses in the online application. It is not possible to save the short answer responses in the application and come back.

Recommenders: You will be asked to provide contact information on your application for two references - one FGCU faculty member and one current FGCU student. It is the applicants responsibility to remind recommenders to submit the online reference form. When you submit your PAL application the reference form will automatically be sent via email to the recommender. Applicants with incomplete applications will not be eligible for an interview.

Unofficial Transcript: Each applicant must upload an unofficial transcript to the online application. There is no fee to request an unofficial transcript. See the PAL Information Packet for complete instructions.

 

Step 3: Participate in the PAL interview process (pending invitation)

All eligible applicants will complete an individual and group interview where representatives from the CAA office, faculty, staff, and student leaders will evaluate applicants' skills relative to the PAL position. Dress is business casual.

 

Step 4: Complete Peer Academic Leader Training

All PALs must attend the orientation and training sessions.
