RESEARCHTo meet the challenges of chemistry in the technology age, chemists must develop novel methodologies to manipulate and create substances of increasing complexity and diversity with dramatically enhanced efficiency and practicality. In recent years, ionic liquids (ILs), molten salts with melting points lower than 100°C, have attracted great interest as environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional organic solvents (VOCs) for reactions and separations due to their often vanishingly-low vapor pressures and the ability to tune their properties using structural modifications. Advances in their development have transitioned them from the first generation, where they were merely regarded as solvents, to a second generation of "Task-specific ionic liquids" (TSILs) where functionalization of the cations or anions provides specific thermophysical or chemical properties designed to accomplish specific reactions or separations tasks. Our research interest focuses on the invention and development of new Task-specific ionic liquids by using the principle of "click" chemistry.
