Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences

Mission/Vision Statement

The Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks to maintain a team of engaged professionals from a range of academic disciplines and traditions who are committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, grounded in but not bound by our disciplines. To an increasingly complex and diverse global community we provide education rooted in key concepts, theories and models of the physical, environmental and social sciences. We provide courses that are integral components of the education of all FGCU students and coherent, up-to-date undergraduate programs in Environmental Studies and Marine Science and and graduate training in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies. Throughout our curricula we emphasize multiple methodological approaches and intellectual perspectives that contribute to the understanding of the long term change born out in evolution and climate change and the more dynamic ecological processes as they occur at local and global levels on various terrestrial and marine environments. Importantly we address the connections made among human beings who inhabit diverse and changing environments and who manifest both similarity and diversity across space and time. We foster the development of student and faculty projects that contribute to the well-being of the local community, the region, and points beyond. We strengthen our teaching and research through active reflection and assessment and through the maintenance of interdisciplinary linkages within and beyond the department. We provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for students, staff and faculty from the diverse global community and respond to the service and advisory needs of the college, university and other entities within the state, the nation, and the world.

International Students

The Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences values all students, faculty, and staff regardless of national origin or immigration status. We support the free cultural exchange of ideas as being at the heart of the academic endeavor. This exchange deepens and broadens our students’ perspectives in an increasingly globalized society.
