Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences

Welcome Letter from the Department

Welcome to the Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences’ home page!

The Department unites faculty, students, and regional professionals in Southwest Florida with interests in sustainable practices associated with natural and cultural resources and in the societal implications of those practices. Additionally, environmental issues are placed in a broader context, relating regional matters to global concerns. Faculty study the Earth’s biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere, and use planetary and stellar processes to understand the history and uniqueness of these systems. These themes run throughout our undergraduate and graduate curricula, and form the basis of much of our scholarship and service commitments.

The Department oversees a variety of programs including a BA in Environmental Studies, a BS in Marine Science, a BA in Anthropology, and minors in Earth & Space Science and Anthropology. At the graduate level, we offer an MS in

Environmental Science and an MA in Environmental Studies. We collaborate with faculty and students in the other Departments and Colleges and with national and international professionals, offering students great flexibility in pursuing scholarly interests. Undergraduate students in all of our programs engage in an internship or senior research project, thus making valuable contacts in industry and academia; our graduate students complete a thesis. The curriculum in all our programs emphasizes hands-on learning with extensive laboratory- and field-based activities.

We encourage you to explore the site and to contact the Department or any of our outstanding faculty members for more information. We look forward to hearing from you.
