Learning Outcomes


Academic Learning Compact

Consistent with its mission and guiding principles, Florida Gulf Coast University is committed to academic excellence and continuous quality improvement, as supported by a sound teaching-learning process. Within this process, students and instructors share responsibility for learning that is a movement from the simple to the complex, the concrete to the abstract, and the dependent to the independent. The Academic Learning Compact (ALC) initiative supports the teaching-learning process by clearly identifying expected core student learning outcomes in the areas of content/discipline knowledge and skills, communication skills, and critical thinking skills; aligning curricula with expectations; and using assessment to guide continuous improvement.
Content/Discipline Knowledge and Skills

Graduates in the Music Education B.M.E. will be able to: 

  1. Demonstrate proper technique, understanding of musical style, poise, and artistic expression in applied area, as soloist and ensemble member as well as plan, develop, and execute recitals appropriate to applied instruments and area.
  2. Demonstrate preparation as a responsive and competent teacher through evidence of classroom performance, lesson plan preparation, communication skills, and ability to provide effective instruction.
  3. Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in the areas of music theory, history, education as identified by the Florida teacher certification exams.

Content/discipline knowledge and skills are assessed at the college and departmental levels through instruments appropriate to the course content and goals.  Jury exams and recital performances are completed in the following courses: MVx 4xxx (Senior Applied Music), MUS 3953, and MUS 4954.  Successful passage of the Florida Teacher Certification Exams – Music (028).

Communication Skills

Graduates in the Music Education B.M.E. will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of style periods in Western music, both in written and oral form.
  2. Demonstrate use of acceptable conventions for writing in both educational formats—e.g. lesson plans, units of study, etc.—and scholarly essays.

A written philosophy of music education essay will be assessed in MUE 3311.  Students will write program notes MUH 3212 and for MUS 3953.

Critical Thinking Skills

Graduates in the Music Education B.M.E. will be able to:

  1. Provide melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and formal analysis of music written from 1700-present and compose short pieces in those styles.
  2. Develop strategies for planning, delivering and assessing K-12 music instruction as well as recognizing, diagnosing and resolving technical and musical issues in K-12 music ensembles.

Students will complete assignments in MUT 3311 that require critical thinking and problem solving skills.  In MUS 4920, students will apply these skills when planning, delivering and assessing music instruction for K-12 students.
