The FGCU Naples Center is located at 1010 5th Avenue South in the heart of old Naples. The Naples Center features three classrooms with seating capacities between 35 – 100, a computer lab, and a conference room. For more than seven years, the Naples Center has been the home of FGCU’s Renaissance Academy. The Renaissance Academy is the University’s and region’s premier lifelong learning program for adults, seniors and retirees. It is based on the premise that learning should never cease, that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively and culturally active fundamentally enriches and invigorates our lives. Among the Renaissance Academy’s offerings are affordable, non-credit single lectures, short courses, day trips, computer classes, film series, life enrichment classes, writing workshops, travel abroad programs and other special events. These programs deliver academic substance in an interactive format that encourages the exchange of ideas and provides both intellectual stimulation and personal enjoyment. There are no exams or grades, just learning for the joy of learning with friends, neighbors and peers.
The Renaissance Academy has a proven track record of significant growth and success. Since its founding, the Academy’s curriculum has grown substantially, from 20 courses to more than 600 in the most recent academic year. This has been fueled by dramatic increases in class registrations, which have grown from 400 in 2001 to more than 10,000 in 2008.
Courses are offered during the fall, winter/spring, and summer semesters at fifteen classroom locations. Course topics include Art, Architecture & Interior Design, Business & Finance, Computer Instruction, Contemporary and Chinese Art, Day Trips & Special Events, Debate & Discussion Groups, Ecology & Environment, Film Series, History, Law & Government, Life Enrichment, Literature & Language, Music, Philosophy & Religion, Photography, Psychology & Sociology, Science and Medicine, Theatre, U.S. and World Affairs and Writing Workshops.
Since 2002, the Renaissance Academy has sponsored more than twelve study-tours abroad to destinations such as Tuscany, Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Cuba, Turkey and Brazil, with attendance averaging twenty-four persons per excursion. Through unique and learning-focused itineraries, participants have the opportunity to learn outside the classroom, to visit historic and cultural sites with outstanding local guides, to experience another culture – its customs, cuisine, language and history – and to delight in conversation and laughter with fellow travelers who share a love of learning and a sense of adventure.
Value, convenience and accessibility underlie the excellence of the Academy’s programs. Lectures are usually 90 minutes in length so they are convenient for even the busiest of schedules. Affordable course fees, typically $25 per lecture, provide access to Academy programming at fifteen classroom locations throughout Collier, Lee & Charlotte counties.
