Dunk City soars to victory against Hartford Hawks

As the sun rose over Fort Myers Tuesday morning, Dunk City got its groove back during its home opener against Hartford, a rivalry dubbed Breakfast at the Beach by ESPN2, which broadcast the game live from the campus that has its own beach by the lake.

In front of a capacity crowd at Alico Arena, the Eagles plucked the Hawks’ feathers, 65-51, pulling ahead just before the half and building on it from there, much to the delight of the stomping, cheering, chanting, singing fans, most of whom arrived well before sunrise.

The win helped ease the pain of the loss the Eagles suffered at the hands of the University of Nebraska in its season opener in Lincoln on Friday, when the Cornhuskers beat them 79-55.

But on Tuesday, the magic was back, with Brett Comer racking up a career-high 30 points in the process.

The team unfurled its NCAA Sweet 16 banner, earned last season, just before game time.

At half time, the women’s team was honored for winning the 2012-13 Atlantic Sun Championship.
