Rick is a research scientist at Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation Marine Lab. He also is a courtesy faculty member of Florida Gulf Coast University. Rick's broad research interest is aquatic ecosystem ecology. He is also interested in finding solutions to eutrophication problems and in developing techniques to produce energy from algae. Most of his work has involved the interactions of aquatic communities, water flow, and nutrients. He has constructed simulation models and mesocosm facilities, conducted lab and mesocosm experiments and conducted field experiments and restoration projects. He has investigated the effects of water quality on seagrasses; effects of large seagrass beds on current flow and water quality; sediment effects on seagrass growth; effects of epiphyte grazers on seagrasses; nutrient effects on macroalgal and cyanobacterial growth; nutrient threshold indicators; ecosystem metabolism; seagrass propagation and restoration; and algal enhanced water treatment. He is also interested in effects of warming seas; hypoxia; effects of thermal effluent; and harmful algae ecology.
