Step 7 - Student Responsibilities

Service-learning students have several responsibilities regarding their experiences:
  • Each student is responsible for selecting service-learning placements and meeting the total hour requirement before graduation check.
  • If you develop your own service-learning placement, remember to get approval from the Office of Service-Learning staff before you begin.
  • Return the signed agreement and verification form to the Office of Service-Learning to get credit for your service-learning hours.
  • Be certain all forms are submitted before the deadline in the semester you plan to graduate. It is even better if you can complete your hours and submit the forms before the semester to graduate. That way, when your advisor does a graduation check, you won't get flagged for not having your service-learning completed.
  • Save a copy of each Agreement and Verification form you submit.  This is your receipt and your safety net in case of a discrepancy.
  • Check on Gulfline that all your service-learning hours have been posted. You don't want to find hours missing when your graduation check is done.
  • Address possible risk and safety factors associated with specific service-learning experiences with the site supervisor before you make a commitment.
  • Once you select a service-learning site, use common sense to ensure your personal safety.  Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.  Dress sensibly without items that mark you as an outsider.  Don't wear expensive jewelry, flash money or carry important personal items with you.
  • Provide your family, roommate or another individual with information such as the agency phone number and your schedule so that you can be reached in an emergency.
  • Give your supervisor necessary emergency contact information for yourself in case you have an accident when you are on site.
