Ph.D. in Civil Engineering

Dr. Tanya Kunberger joined FGCU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering in August, 2007. She graduated cum laude from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor's of Civil Engineering and a certificate in geochemistry. Her MS in Civil Engineering, with a minor in Soil Science, and her Ph.D. were obtained at North Carolina State University. Dr. Kunberger was a recipient of the 2003 Center for Transportation and the Environment's Student of the Year Award and a 2007 recipient of NC State's UGSA Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award as well as the 2008 ASEE CE Division Gerald R. Seeley Award recipient for best paper from a young faculty member. She has worked on research projects in North Carolina and Ohio, as well as for the Department of Transportation in both Georgia and North Carolina.

Dr. Kunberger is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society for Engineering Education, and the United States University Council on Geotechnical Education and Research. Her research interests include contaminant remediation, colloid mobilization, soil mineral - contaminant interaction, and chemical and physical methods of soil stabilization. Broader research interests include pedagogical approaches in engineering education, the effects of technology on student learning and the implication of early exposure to engineering concepts to on the future pursuit of engineering studies.
