Welcome to the Department of Software Engineering at FGCU! I invite you to explore our web site to learn more about our B.S. degree program in Software Engineering.

Software Engineering is the engineering discipline that utilizes a systematic approach to the development, production, operation, and maintenance of software. Software Engineers, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, design, construct, test and maintain needed software. Software engineers often work as part of a team that together design and develop software and computing systems. Software engineers can work for computer systems design firms, software publishers, or for computer or electronic product manufacturers. Because of the wide variety of software applications, numerous opportunities can be pursued by software engineers. They can develop software products that run on thousands of computers. They may also write programs that run on a cell phone. Today, the software industry makes software products to be used by most, if not all, fields, such as in banking, retailing, education, social networks, the defense and gaming industries, etc. Because of this, software engineers are in high demand both in government agencies and private sectors. Software engineers can also further their education at the graduate level in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, via an MBA, etc.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists Software Engineer as one of the top engineering careers for the next decade. Employment of software developers is projected to grow by 17 percent from 2014 to 2024 (yielding 186,600 new jobs in the US).  Total current academic year enrollment in the FGCU B.S. Software Engineering Program is 335 students (official institutional numbers for program majors plus pre-majors as of the Fall semester of 2016).  Program graduates over the most recent prior academic year of 2015-16 totaled 48.  The number of program graduates for academic year 2016-17 is expected to be about 39 students.
