What is the College-Level Examination Program or CLEP?

The College Board’s College-Level Examination program, also known as CLEP, is a set of exams that allow students who are pursuing a degree in higher education to demonstrate mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit for it.

Why should I consider taking a CLEP exam?

Students can ear credit for what they already know by getting qualified scores on any of the 33 examinations the CLEP program offers.

However, only colleges may gran credit toward a degree. Not all institutions have the same CLEP policy. Please consult with your organization’s academic advising to find out their guidelines.

What if I am a Florida Gulf Coast University student?

If you are interested in finding out the passing scores, the maximum credit awarded, and the subject examinations FGCU may grant credit for, please consult your academic advisor for up-to-date information.

FGCU will award university credit in accordance with state guidelines. Exam scores may also earn credit for specific FGCU courses. These will be evaluated on a case by case basis. AP, IB, and CLEP information regarding courses/areas for which FGCU credit may be assigned is subject to change.

How do I register for a CLEP exam at Testing and Assessment?

Registering for a CLEP exam at Florida Gulf Coast University’ Testing and Assessment center takes two steps:

  1. You must visit the CLEP website first to register for a CLEP exam and create your account with the College Board. You will pay for your exam and materials at this point.
  2. You may go to our online registration page to register for an exam at our Testing Center. You will be able to choose your preferred date and time upon availability.

What is the fee associated with taking the CLEP exam?

The College Board charges $85 for each exam. The fee for the exam delivery and proctoring at the Testing Center is $38.50.

Please note that there is a fee of $28.50 associated with rescheduling your exam at our center.

Are there important things I need to know?

The answer is yes, there are:

  • Please note the CLEP exam fee will increase to $87 on July 1, 2018.
  • You can only take the same CLEP exam at least every three months.

How do I request disability-related accommodations for a CLEP exam?

That depends:

  • If you are a current FGCU student or have been accepted to FGCU, you need to register with the Office of Adaptive Services. You will receive instructions as to how to arrange to take the CLEP exam there with your accommodations.
  • If you are not an FGCU student you need to contact the Office of Adaptive Services for more information.

What do I have to bring on the day of my appointment?

We recommend arriving at least fifteen minutes before your appointment time.

You need to bring a copy of your CLEP registration ticket.

You need to bring an acceptable and not-expired form of government-issued photo identification with signature, such as:

  • Driver’s license
  • State-issued photo ID
  • Passport
  • Current State or Federal ID Card
  • Tribal ID Card
  • Naturalization card or Certificate of Citizenship

Military candidates must additionally bring their military ID.
