Who We Are

The FGCU Writing Center is a free service available to all FGCU students, faculty, and staff.  Our goals are to help you become a more confident writer and to serve as a valuable resource for you during your academic career at FGCU and beyond. To this end, we offer a variety of services, including one-on-one sessions with expert writing consultants, workshops on a range of writing-related topics, and a broad selection of handouts developed specifically for the FGCU community.

Writing Center Sessions

During a one-on-one session, you will work directly with one of our writing consultants to talk about the questions and concerns you have about your writing and how you can go about approaching them. Our consultants can help you during any stage of the writing process, from when you first get your assignment guidelines and need an idea of where to start to making grammar edits and formatting your citations. For those interested in a session, there are two options: coming in for a walk-in session or making an appointment.

For Walk-ins: For a walk-in session, just stop by the Writing Center and sign in! Walk-in sessions are available on a first come, first served basis, so if you would ever like to check on tutor availability and wait times you can call us at (239) 590-7141 or visit us on Facebook and Twitter. This is a great option if your schedule varies and you are not sure ahead of time when you will be able to stop in.

For Appointments: To make an appointment, you can visit us here. First time visitors will need to create an account, which you can do through the “register for an account” link on the login screen. This option is perfect if you know you have a certain period of time available and want to ensure you can fit a session into your schedule.

The same policies apply to both walk-in and appointment sessions. They are each 30 minutes in length, and you are limited to two sessions in a day, which allows you the time needed to revise independently between visits.

Common Myths about Writing Centers

Writing Centers are for Remedial Writers

False! The Writing Center is for all writers, at all stages of the writing process.  Discussion and feedback on writing useful at any point in the writing process, and for all types of writing. Whether you are working on an essay or a discussion post, a scholarship application or an email, on an assignment for Composition 1 or Senior Seminar, we can help you improve your writing.

The Writing Center is Only an Editing and Proofreading Service

Also false! Consultants at the Writing Center will never make edits to your paper and hand it back. This is your work, after all, and you are responsbile for making changes to it.  Instead, when you come to the Writing Center you can expect to discuss any aspects of your writing, not just grammar, and to collaborate with your consultant in discovering ways to improve your writing and to develop a plan of action for the next steps for your writing process.

Writing Centers Guarantee Better Grades

Because we are not your professors, this, too, is false. While we will always do everything we can to help you improve your writing, your consultant does not directly edit an assignment; predict, explain, or assess the validity of a grade; or give the “okay” on a document as mistake-free. However, the Writing Center can be used in conjunction with feedback from your professors, and, in fact, we encourage you to visit us after you receive your feedback with any additional questions you may have. If you have questions directly related to your grades, we will always recommend that you see your instructor for more information.
