Program Progression And Additional Graduation Requirements

  • All students must pass the comprehensive examination to complete program requirements. A master’s thesis is optional.
  • A minimum of 33 credit hours.
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all coursework in program.
  • Each course for this program must be completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Successful completion of all policies and procedures outlined in the English Program Graduate Student Handbook.
  • Submit an application for graduation by the deadline listed in the FGCU Academic Calendar
  • A maximum of 9 credits of course work may be transferred from other institutions, subject to approval of the English Graduate Studies Coordinator.

Program Requirements

  1. Required Courses in the Major (3 credits)
    Complete the following:
    ENG 6058 Lit., Language, and Society (3)
    ENG 6966 Master's Comprehensive Exam (0)

  2. Electives in the Major (30 credits)
    At least one of these electives must cover a period of literature or literary studies prior to 1900 (*), and at least one must cover a period of literature or literary studies after 1900 (**).

  3. Complete 6 hours of the following:
    AML 6017 American Literature to 1860 (3)
    AML 6027 Lit of the US after 1900** (3)
    AML 6268 Regional US Literature (3)
  4. AML 6305 Major US Authors (3)
    AML 6930 ST: US Literature and Culture (3)

  5. Complete 6 hours of the following:
    ENL 6305 Major British Authors (3)
    ENL 6335 Studies in Shakespeare (3)
    ENL 6507 British Literature before 1900* (3)
    ENL 6508 British Literature after 1900** (3)
    ENL 6930 Spec Top in British Literature (3)

  6. Complete 6 hours of the following:
    LIT 6066 Studies in Comparative Lit (3)
    LIT 6096 Contemporary Literature** (3)
    LIT 6406 Interdisciplinary Literature (3)
    LIT 6806 Literature as Cultural Study (3)
    LIT 6930 Special Topics (3)

  7. Complete 12 hours of the following:
    AML 6910 Directed Research (3)
    CRW 6910 Directed Research (3)
    CRW 6930 Spec Tops in Creative Writing (3)
    ENC 6745 Seminar in Composition Pedagogy (3)***
    ENG 6940 English Masters Internship (0-6)
    ENG 6971 Thesis (1-3)
    ENL 6910 Directed Research (3)
    LIT 6910 Directed Research (3)

    Any additional AML, ENL, or LIT course numbered 5000 or higher not being used to fulfill the Electives in the Major above.

    Up to six credits chosen from other departments with written approval of the English Graduate Studies Coordinator.

    ***Composition Teaching Assistants must complete this course prior to receiving a teaching assignment.
