FGCU students' business plan takes state award
The business plan for a patent-pending product invented by FGCU students took first place at the Florida Venture Forum 2013 Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition Wednesday in Orlando.

The product, AquaRamp, is a ramp that lowers people with disabilities into a swimming pool. The students won $5,000 for legal fees from a law firm and free submission for the university to enter the competition next year. They were also able to pitch their product to venture capitalists.

Winning the competition was good for the university, too, said Sandra Kauanui, chairwoman of the management department at FGCU and director of the business college's Institute for Entrepreneurship. She took the students to Orlando.

"It shows that we are not just great at basketball," she said. The Eagles went to the Sweet Sixteen this year in the NCAA men's tournament.

In December, AquaRamp had won the Eagle Biz Awards, which is a class-based project at FGCU that challenges students to develop and market a product requested by the community that can be used nationwide.
