Details: Afcaam Center has two After School Programs, one on Michigan Avenue and one at St. Columbkille. We serve families who have children in Grades Kindergarten through Grade 5. AFCAAM also offers one-on-one and group mentoring for teen girls and boys ages 10 to 17 years of age. Group mentoring is held Tuesday nights from 5-7pm and the one-on-one program places a mentor with a mentee for 12 months. Both programs offer excellent opportunities for service and volunteer hours.
Job Description: There are many ways to gain service hours at Afcaam. Below are ways to Volunteer or Intern:

Real World Reading Tutors- These Volunteers bring their experiences in to a K-5 Classroom being a homework helper and they work with teachers to help with their Reading lesson plans; they understand Reading skill challenges that need to be worked on as they tutor a student one on one.

Event Volunteers- Volunteers are needed onsite for programmatic events (Christmas, our Spring Pot-Luck Supper, etc.) to set-up (decorate), break-down, raffle sales, help with setting up buffet, breaking down, and picking up after event.

Student Intern -This is a rich intern opportunity working with and learning from a Development Coordinator in a Marketing (educating others about AFCAAM) and Fund Raising. Intern will work to secure community sponsors and gain donated prizes for the Afcaam Center Charity Golf Event, for Catholic Charities Mentoring and After School Programs.

Student Teacher Internships- Daily meetings, Data Collection of pre and post test Diagnostics i_Ready, web-based testing, Classroom Management, Implementing Data to create Lesson Planning (using Common Core FL Standards and data collection), Parent conferences, Teacher mentoring (Our teachers are certified, retired). Parent pick up & other duties, 8 Professional Development Days, learning teaching strategies and researched based instruction facilitated by PhD’s from FGCU.

Snack Distribution/Compliance- in charge of the daily distribution of snacks. These volunteers are trained to handle responsibilities and understand compliance for county snack distribution. Responsible for county rosters, end of day counts, and return of binder. Keeping in Compliance: no use of pencil, each student is marked off “P” & “S” or “–“, rosters are tallied and initialed. Time of snack distribution is compliant, etc.

Greeters- These volunteers stay focused on who is coming in to the building and keep the visitors in the reception area. They also answer phones and transfer calls. They also use walkie-talkies to communicate with Program Director to let teachers know if parents are here early to pick up their children. It is helpful but not required to speak Spanish and English.

We need individuals who can challenge kids to take school work seriously. We need good role models who can challenge and inspire. Marketing persons who can gain donors should be energetic and imaginative individuals to assist us structure and organize fundraising events. AFCAAM hosts an Annual Golf Tournament in April, and always needs help for this. Seek out this position in February.
