The Coastal Watershed Institute (CWI) was established to address regional concerns regarding the use and conservation of coastal watersheds by supporting undergraduate and graduate education in marine science and coastal watershed study; by focusing and coordinating university research on coastal environments and the conservation of natural resources; and by disseminating information to the citizens of Southwest Florida to engage and inform them about the health of coastal watersheds and related issues.
The Coastal Watershed Institute, through research and coastal monitoring, applies an integrated watershed approach to issues of local and regional concern to develop an improved understanding of resources for their conservation and sustainable use;
The Coastal Watershed Institute builds the capacity to address existing and emerging environmental issues through collaboration and the recruitment of new faculty and Graduate students;
The Coastal Watershed Institute synthesizes data into useful information to encourage the greater understanding, protection, and sustainable use of resources to support and inform decision makers and the general public;
The Coastal Watershed Institute provides continuity of learning and discovery by training the next generation of scientists and managers through student engagement in all Coastal Watershed Institute goals and functions.
