First Year Advising - Office of New Student Programs

First Year Advising Mission Statement:

First Year Advisors guide new students in their transition into and navigation of the university experience. Our staff helps students clarify their interests, skills and values in the context of class selection, major choice, and curriculum planning. We empower students to make informed academic decisions; while helping them interpret policy and understand the university resources available to assist in their academic success.

Advisor Goals in working with first year freshman students:

  • Develop understanding of students' shared responsibility within advisement.
  • Help interpret institutional requirements utilizing the catalog, student guidebook and FGCU website.
  • Assist in the development of realistic educational plans compatible with life and career goals.
  • Reinforce active awareness and engaged participation in the development of educational planning.
  • Guide in the selection of appropriate courses and complimentary educational experiences.
  • Enhance awareness of educational resources on campus.
  • Help with curricular planning and strategizing for timely completion of degree requirements.
  • Discuss options and potential consequences of decision making.
  • Educate in comprehension of the FGCU advising model and develop utilization of technology within advisement.
  • Inform students of institutional and community resources available to enhance their educational experience.
