Stephen A. Black is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University. Stephen has 25+ years experience in the health and wellness industry. He promotes healthy lifestyles and providing expert insight and research in areas related to rehabilitation, fitness and sports specific training. He has worked with professional teams including NFL, NBA, NHL, WNBA and ABL/NBL affiliates.
In his spare time, Stephen enjoys recreational activities such as running, cycling, swimming, skiing and experiential activities that lead to a balanced/integrated lifestyle. He has completed multiple endurance events including the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI. Stephen’s passion is in assisting others achieve the lifestyle they aspire to.
As a Physical Therapist, Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Stephen utilizes his expertise and experience to the benefit of his students and clients. Currently Stephen has academic responsibilities within the physical therapy, athletic training and exercise science disciplines at the University.
Research and Scholarly Interests:
Childhood Obestity - Focusing on Middle School Students:
- Devising a multi-focused approach to the prevention of overweight and obestity
- Intervention utilized education on nutrition and health approach to food, regular participation in physical activity, food in the social environment, and food in the home environment.
Cardiovascular Response to Exercise through the Ages:
- Adjusting frequency, intensity and duration of cardiovascular exercise predicated on physiologic changes in age
- Cardiac damage with prolonged, sustained high intensity endurance activity - focus on endurance and multisport athletics
