Dr. Brigitte Belanger joined the faculty in the Occupational Therapy Program at FGCU in February of 2016.  She received her Doctorate of Science from Baylor University (Waco, TX) in Occupational Therapy in 2011, her Master’s of Health Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) in 1997, and her Master’s of Arts in Bicultural & Bilingual Education from the University of Texas in San Antonio (San Antonio, TX) in 1992. Before moving to the U.S. in 1988, Dr. Belanger received her Bachelor of Arts in Translation from Concordia University (Montreal, Canada) in 1987.

Dr. Belanger has recently retired from the U.S. Military completing a career as an Army Occupational Therapist serving in various medical centers and including tours of duty in Iraq with Combat Stress Control and Afghanistan as a Concussion Care Specialist. Most recently she was the Associate Director for the Baylor Doctor of Science program in Occupational Therapy at Fort Sam Houston, TX. Her areas of expertise include: Orthopedics, Behavioral Health, Traumatic Brain Injury, Home Health and Gerontology. Dr. Belanger’s current interest are in the area of Veteran reintegration and animal assisted therapy.

Teaching Information:

Dr. Belanger began her teaching career at the high school level first as a French teacher then moving into English as a Second Language.  She spent the next 15 years honing her occupational therapy skills and returning to teach in the Army Baylor Doctor of Science program at Ft Sam Houston, TX.  Upon retirement from the military Dr. Belanger accepted a teaching position at Florida Gulf Coast University in the Occupational Therapy Master’s program.

Service Information:

Dr. Belanger is dedicated to assisting veterans transition from the military to higher education. She is currently President of the Lee Coast Chapter of Military Officers where she advocates for support of military veterans. She is involved in FGCU Veteran Services and participates in the Home Base Program. Dr. Belanger is also passionate about the 2025 OT vision striving for prevention of injury and promotion of OT services.  She has established partnerships with several local non profit charities and strives to expose OT students to community involvement and inclusion in non-traditional settings.  Obtaining a SAGE grant in 2016 OT students were able to create a composting system for Ft Myers Community Cooperative.
