Transition Resources

Students who are beginning college at FGCU face many challenges when adjusting to a new environment and their parents face the challenge of supporting their students in this transition. Students have to learn to manage the freedom and independence that comes with being on their own and making their own decisions on a daily basis. Parents have to adjust to their own “shift of responsibility”, as they assume the role of supportive mentor rather than continuing to serve as a parent who provides daily supervision.

You may experience a range of emotions as you see your student “off to college”. While you are certainly elated and excited for your child, you may experience some anxiety over whether he or she is truly ready to make responsible choices for themselves.  Whatever your experience, however, know that you are not alone and that the university provides many helpful resources to assist you and your student.

If you have any questions about the services available to support your student in successfully adjusting to the challenges of higher education, please contact the Office of New Student Programs at (239) 590-7957.

Again, we welcome you and your student to the FGCU community and wish you a successful and enriching experience!
