Pets Can Be Trained to Work With Persons With Disabilities Through Florida Gulf Coast University Program

FORT MYERS, FL - Southwest Florida Center for Positive Aging at Florida Gulf Coast University offers “Pet Partners Informational Workshop” for the pet owner only from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 7, 2001 in FGCU Reed Hall Room 146.

If you love your pet and would like to help others in Southwest Florida you may want to attend this free workshop and become a Delta Society Certified Pet Partner Team as part of Southwest Florida Animal Assisted Therapy (SWAAT). Pets and owners train and are evaluated as a team.

Pet Partner Teams are volunteers trained in techniques of animal assisted therapy and activity. Volunteer teams provide social, mental and physical stimulation to people with disabilities or who can’t have pets themselves. The Pet Partners Program trains volunteers and screens their pets for visiting animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, homes, and rehabilitation centers. Training is provided through hands-on workshops taught by Delta-licensed instructors.

Over 2,500 Pet Partners teams now operate in 45 states and four other countries, helping more than 350,000 people each year.

The pet owner will receive informative materials and be able to sign up for a 25-minute pet evaluation on April 21. More information about the program is available on the web at:
