FGCU Student-Athletes Receive High Marks in the Classroom

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University is proud to announce the grade point averages of its men’s and women’s golf and tennis teams.

“Our student-athletes have accomplished a great deal in their first year, but this is by far their greatest achievement. Since day one, we have said that academics come first and I believe that our student-athletes’ GPAs prove that we are serious,” commented FGCU Director of Athletics Carl McAloose.

The goal GPA for FGCU athletes was set for 3.0 by the Department of Athletics. In the spring semester, the combined total was 3.24. The students attained a 3.20 cumulative GPA for the 2000-01 academic year.

Men’s golf had many accomplishments. Eight of the ten golfers earned above a 3.0 GPA in the spring semester. The spring GPA was 3.47 and the overall GPA was 3.26. Adam Gary, the team captain, achieved the highest cumulative GPA on the team with a 3.96.

Women’s golf hit high standards, as their overall GPA was 3.02. Lindsay Rigby, originally from Canada, ranked highest academically with a 4.0 all year.

Men’s tennis had a successful year as the spring GPA was 3.18 and the cumulative GPA all year was 3.08. While keeping busy on the court, three of the players earned over a 3.75.

The women’s tennis team achieved high marks with eight of its ten players scoring above a 3.0 for the spring semester and the 2000-01 academic year. Collectively, the women had a 3.20 spring GPA and 3.29 overall. Diana Murillo, formerly from Costa Rica, earned an outstanding 4.0 for the entire school year.

Standing proudly by the athletes, the coaches kept them busy in and out of the classroom. “The coaches deserve a great deal of credit for recruiting quality student-athletes and monitoring the academic progress of each of their players,” McAloose added.

FGCU is an accredited comprehensive public university created to address the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and dedicated to providing a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities. The student-athletes honorably represent the emphasis of academics FGCU places on its students.
