Renaissance Academy Offers Summer Program on FGCU Campus "Arts and Healing"

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University’s Renaissance Academy welcomes friends and new faces to its College3 summer courses on the FGCU campus. On select days in July and August, this program consists of three unique glimpses into the world of literature and the arts.

“Visualizing the Arts at FGCU” provides the student an overview of the role FGCU’s arts program will have in contributing to the cultural life of Southwest Florida. FGCU associate professor Morgan Paine will teach the course from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on four consecutive Mondays starting July 9.

“Literary Nonfiction: The Writer in Place and Community” is the second offering of the College3 campus summer series. Students will explore nonfiction literature and examine how several American writers express their connections to both place and community. FGCU assistant professor Bill Doyle will instruct the classes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning July 10.

The third program in the curriculum, “Arts and Healing” examines how visual, literary and the performing arts can be used to heal the body, soul, community and the Earth. It explores the healing power of the arts throughout history and cultures. FGCU visiting instructor, Susan Sholle-Martin will conduct the course from 10 a.m. to noon on five consecutive Tuesdays beginning July 3.

FGCU created the Renaissance Academy on the premise that learning should never stop and that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively and culturally active enhances the quality of life. FGCU, an accredited comprehensive public university created to address the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and dedicated to providing a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities, offers the Renaissance Academy as part of the University’s commitment to serving the region.

The fee for each course is $35 for Renaissance Academy members and $50 for all others. Space is limited and early registration is advised. Participants may register up to and including the first day of class, space permitting.

For information about the courses, to register or to become a member of the Academy, contact Eileen Regelski at the FGCU Renaissance Academy office at (941) 590-1095 or visit the Web site at
