High School Senior Arrested on Monday Will Attend College FGCU Says It Will Foot the Bill If Necessary

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University President Dr. William C. Merwin says if Estero High School senior Lindsay Brown does not receive her state-sponsored scholarship, the FGCU Foundation is stepping up to the plate to offer her a replacement.

“Our Foundation Board will raise the money to support her scholarship if the Bright Futures Program proves not to work out,” President Merwin said. “Students with her academic record - a 3.7 GPA, top 20 percent in her class - are highly meritorious and reflect the caliber of students that FGCU wishes to recruit.”

Brown gained national attention when she was arrested on Monday after school officials found a kitchen knife that was left in her car. Unbeknownst to Brown, the knife apparently had fallen during a move over the weekend. School officials suspended her and Brown, 18, now faces felony charges. A felony conviction will prohibit her from receiving her Bright Futures Scholarship, which Florida awards to students who achieve a high grade point average.

“We at FGCU wish to assure her that she has one less thing to worry about. We are motivated by the wish to provide assistance to one of our fully admitted and highly regarded students,” President Merwin said. “We really do want her to attend FGCU.”
