FGCU Names Horton as Assistant Athletics Director/Men's Tennis Coach

FORT MYERS, FL - Today, Florida Gulf Coast University named J. Webb Horton as Assistant Athletics Director/Men’s Tennis Coach. Formerly the head coach of women’s tennis and coordinator of Diversity Outreach at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky., Horton will begin his duties at FGCU on August 1.

“We are extremely excited about bringing someone of such quality and character to the FGCU program,” FGCU Athletics Director Carl McAloose said. “J. Webb has enjoyed success in every task that he has undertaken. His track record of creating a learning environment and his enthusiasm for FGCU makes him a very appealing addition to our staff.”

Horton led NKU to a 16-3 record during the 2000-01 season. NKU had a perfect 16-0 NCAA Division II record, with the only three losses of the season coming against NCAA Division I opponents. His team won the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season and tournament championship, and he was named GLVC Coach of the Year.

Before coaching at Northern Kentucky, Horton served for four seasons as Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach and admissions counselor for IUPU Fort Wayne. Before his assignments at IPFW, Horton was Midwest Representative for Head Sports. He started his college coaching duties at St. Francis University in Fort Wayne where he directed the team to the NAIA National Championships.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity that I will have at Florida Gulf Coast University,”Horton said.“The student-athletes that return to the tennis team are very strong both on the court and in the classroom, so I am really looking forward to working with them. The enthusiasm within the FGCU athletics department to create a quality environment for student-athletes seems contagious. I look forward to being a pioneer and blazing new paths for FGCU and our athletics program.”

Horton is a graduate of Edinboro State University in Pennsylvania with a degree in political science/pre-law.
As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the public. Only four years old, FGCU opened its doors to students for the first time in 1997. FGCU currently sponsors men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf. Men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball will begin intercollegiate play in fall 2002.
