FGCU Signs Third Basketball Recruit

Florida Gulf Coast University head men’s basketball coach Dave Balza announced the signing of his third recruit. Jeff Ardizon, a 6’7, 225-pound power forward, has signed on with the Eagles. He joins Bryan Crislip and Ryan Hopkins, who signed a week ago, in Balza’s first recruiting class.

Ardizon grew up in Miami and resides there with his father, Julio Ardizon. Jeff played high school ball in Sugarland, Texas, with perennial national powerhouse Stephen F. Austin High School, graduating this past spring. A solid student, he comes to FGCU to be closer to home.

As a senior, Ardizon averaged 12.2 points per game, hauled down 8.1 rebounds per game, and dished out 1.8 assists per game en route to being named honorable mention All-District. In his junior season, Ardizon averaged 9.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 2.2 apg. That season, he helped lead his team to a 23-12 record and a Bi-District Championship. He spent the past couple of summers traveling the nation and honing his skills with the Houston Superstars AAU program.

Ardizon visited the campus in late June and chose Florida Gulf Coast University over Guilford, Barry, Greensboro, FIU and Lipscomb University. “When I went down to visit, everyone was really respectful and nice,” stated Ardizon. “I really felt comfortable with Coach and his style of game. Not many people get the opportunity to wear the first jersey at a university. I cannot wait until our first game.”

Coach Balza, who has worked with nine post players that have gone on to play professionally, was equally complimentary in regards to his newest recruit. “Jeff is a great fit for our institution,” said Balza. “He’s an agile post player with loads of potential, and he understands how to fill a role. That’s an important characteristic at this level. His high school team had four Division 1 players on it, so he knows how to play with other skilled players. Jeff is an outstanding young man and I look forward to getting a chance to work with him on a daily basis.”

Ardizon joins D1 transfers Bryan Crislip (from Arkansas-Little Rock) and Ryan Hopkins (from Eastern Michigan) as the first recruiting class in the history of Florida Gulf Coast University. FGCU begins play in the fall of 2002.
