Florida Gulf Coast University Hosts Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will host the first Southwest Florida Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk for Lee and Collier counties, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 20.

Registration is now underway for the Alzheimer’s Association’s largest fund-raising event. Teams are being formed and team captains are signing up to make Memory Walk even more fun. The Memory Walk is a 1.8-mile course that takes place on the FGCU campus and includes music, food, entertainment and prizes. The walk will conclude with a live performance by the Cape Chorale Men’s Choir who has graciously offered their support to FGCU for this event.

Funds are used to benefit community services and programs for families and individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease impacts one out of every three families in the United States. There are 29,000 individuals living in southwest Florida with Alzheimer’s disease; 12,000 of them live in Lee County and 6,000 in Collier County. The disease’s toll on families, who provide 80 percent of their care, is often physically, emotionally and financially devastating. Alzheimer’s disease affects memory, logic, communication, physical functioning and personality of those affected. Victims will eventually require 24-hour care and be unable to communicate, feed themselves, walk or even recognize their loved ones.

All funds raised will remain in our local communities. This year the funds raised will help get the Memory Mobile rolling. The Memory Mobile is a mobile office with the telecommunications capacity to link with FGCU. It will reach underserved families in Southwest Florida and connect the expertise of the University faculty, with the know-how of the Alzheimer’s Association to ease the burden in rural areas.

Co-chairwomen for the FGCU Memory Walk are Linda Buettner and Suzanne Fitzsimmons, co-directors for the Southwest Florida Center for Positive Aging.

Contact the FGCU Center for Positive Aging at (941) 590-7852 or the local Alzheimer’s Association toll-free at 888-409-5727, for more information or a registration form.
