FGCU Hosts National Conference "Information Strategies 2001"

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will host university librarians from all over America during the national conference “Information Strategies 2001” Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 14-16 at the Fort Myers Holiday Inn Select.

Presented by the State University Libraries of Florida, Information Strategies 2001 will explore the role of information technology in transforming universities, the way they work and how students learn.

Keynote speakers include Diane Nester Kresh, director of Public Service Collections and the Collaborative Digital Reference Service at the Library of Congress, and Charles McClure, Francis Eppes Professor of Information Studies and director of the Information Use Management and Policy Institute at Florida State University.

A pre-conference Library and Information Technology Association regional institute on database driven web sites is offered Wednesday, Nov. 14 by Kristen Antelman, head of Systems and Networking at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Library.

A special presentation by Fred W. Weingarten, director of the Office for Information Technology Policy of the American Library Association, will address research analysis and policy implications of new technology for libraries and librarians.

The conference also includes 15 general sessions presented in five topical tracks, including:

Communication Track. Track Leader: Carolyn Gray, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, FGCU. Track covers the topics of intellectual property, E-publishing, copyright, web publishing and related topics.

“Born Electronic/Born Analog: Commonality and Difference in Current and Retrospective ETD Projects at the University of Florida” - Maggie Doherty and Monica Metz-Wiseman, University of South Florida

Collaboration Track. Track Leader: Diane Brown, director of Member and Educational Services, SOLINET. Track covers the topics of faculty/librarian partnerships, E-classrooms, web-based learning, information literacy and related issues.

“The Ideal and the Real: Integration of Instructional Teams, Learning Communities and the First-Year Experience” - Polly D. Boruff-Jones and May Jafari, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

Innovation Track. Track Leader: Althea Jenkins, director of University Libraries, Florida State University. Track covers the topics of web portals, wireless technology, web design, meta-data, scanning and archiving, and related issues.

“Dynamic Web Pathfinder: Subject Librarian Empowerment” - Kitti Canepi, Anjana Bhatt and Georgia Allen, FGCU

Information-Seeking Behaviors Track. Track Leader: Kathleen Burnett, associate dean of Information Studies, Florida State University. Track covers the different ways users find and use information.

“Patterns of Graduate Research in the Electronic Age: Are There Differences in Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences?” Carol Drum and Carol A. Turner, University of Florida

Digital Library Services Track. Track Leader: Stephanie Race, assistant director of the Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLN). Track covers the topics of virtual reference, 24/7 public service, web-based services, real-time web interaction and related issues.
