Community, Visitors Invited to Tour SW Florida History and Literary Past with FGCU

FORT MYERS, FL - Community residents and visitors are invited to tour a piece of Southwest Florida history and literary past during "Three 'Faces' of the Everglades.and Its Writers" a guided presentation by Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the national library conference"Information Strategies 2001." The tour begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 at the Holiday Inn Select in Fort Myers. The deadline to reserve space is 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5.

The tour will visit the locales of such writers as Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Patrick Smith, Peter Mathiessen and Loren G. (Totch) Brown and will give insight into the distinct "faces" of the Everglades: Bald Cypress Swamp, the River of Grass, and the Ten Thousand Islands. The trip will include a visit to the Ted Smallwood Store and Indian Trading Post Museum, one of Collier County's longest-standing structures, and nearby Everglades City, the base site for the 1920's construction of the Tamiami Trail and Museum of the Everglades.

The United Nations lists the Everglades among the world's most important natural areas. Its restoration is the largest public works project in the history of our planet. Participants will see it through writings of the authors and hear from descendants of a time when "shoot quick" and "cover your kill" were unwritten laws in Florida's last frontier.

Reservations should be made directly to Royal Palm Tours at (941) 368-0760 or (800) 296-0249. Price of the tour is $59 and includes motorcoach transportation, dinner at Seafood Depot in Everglades City, admission to all attractions visited, a local tour guide throughout the tour and a donation to the Audubon of Florida Everglades Conservation Project. Price does not include tour driver or guide gratuities. The tour will return about 9 p.m.
