NAIA Ranks FGCU Golf First and Second; Men's Team Will Prove Their Putts at Miromar Lakes Invitational This Weekend

FORT MYERS, FL - ‘Number One’ and ‘Number Two’ is what the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics had to say about the men’s and women’s golf teams at Florida Gulf Coast University.

In only their second year of competition, both teams elevated themselves from twin no. 7 slots in preseason. Athletics director Carl McAloose says the teams earned the distinction. He attributes the rise to the sheer determination of the student-athletes and the watchful eyes of head coaches Jim Suttie and Holly Vaughn.

“Coach Suttie and Coach Vaughn have done an incredible job of recruiting quality student-athletes at FGCU,” McAloose said. “We expected to be successful but never thought that success would come in our infancy.”

This weekend FGCU’s men’s team will try to hold their number one ranking when they host nine other universities at Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club.

The field of teams include two NCAA I schools, St. John’s University and Northern Illinois University; four NCAA II schools, Barry University, Lynn University, Quincy University and Valdosta State University; and five NAIA teams, FGCU (Blue and Green teams), Johnson & Wales (Red and White teams), and Nova Southeastern University. FGCU and Johnson & Wales will each field two teams.

The field of 11 will play 36 holes Saturday beginning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes of golf will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday morning. The tournament is free of charge to spectators.

At any rate, McAloose knows his teams are “class acts” no matter how they play.

“We are very proud of our teams’ accomplishments both on the course and in the classroom. The great thing is that they are ranked number one and number two in the country and both teams hold above a 3.0 grade point average. Our student-athletes have done a wonderful job balancing academics and athletics. They are carrying the flag for FGCU.”
