"Negotiation and Mediation Skills" Workshop Offered by Florida Institute of Government

FORT MYERS, FL - Administrative assistants from both the private and public sectors are invited to attend a half-day course “Negotiation and Mediation Skills” presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the its Supervisory Series from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. The course will be held at the Center for Professional Development at Edison Community College.

Learn how to resolve disputes, defuse conflicts or negotiate issues with management, staff or the public. The seminar teaches skills of mediation that the employee can apply directly and immediately on the job. The focus will be on ways to produce outcomes that are more positive and stronger relationships in your personal and professional life.


Understand the role of mediation and a mediator

Observe a mediation demonstration

Learn how to deal with an impasse

Discuss issues that can and cannot be mediated

Learn how to develop trust and cooperation

Discuss how to handle the reluctant party

Learn how to get what you want and need

Dr. David Kelley is instructor for the program. He is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Tennessee, a master’s degree from the Divinity School of Duke University and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Organization Development from the San Francisco Theological Seminary in California. He is an ordained United Methodist minister and the founder and former pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church of Cape Coral. Kelley is a Florida-licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in Fort Myers and Naples. He is a licensed mediator for the state of Florida and has been providing training through the IOG for more than 15 years.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities, such as administratively hosting the Institute.
