"Communication & Listening Skills" Workshop Offered by Florida Institute of Government

FORT MYERS, FL - Supervisors and employees from both the private and public sectors are invited to attend a full-day course “Communication and Listening Skills” presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the its Supervisory Series from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5. The course will be held at the Center for Professional Development at Edison Community College.

There are dozens of opportunities in the workplace to use communication and listening skills with customers, coworkers and managers. In this seminar, attendees will learn to move past communication barriers in order to obtain better results and relationships. This workshop promotes listening, advocacy and inquiry skills, which can produce more meaningful and clearer understandings between people in the workplace.


     Clarify the purpose of meaningful communication

     Practice effective communication techniques

     Assess personal listening skills

     Identify the specific skills necessary for dialoguing

     Identify appropriate learning modes of the listener - visual, auditory and kinesthetic

     Distinguish between differences of opinion and conflict

Anne Schroeder is instructor for the program. She is president of Schroeder Management Consultants and has over 20 years experience in developing organizations and their personnel, including top-level executives of several national associations. Her firm provides management consultation and training seminars to thousands of business and professional people every year, including providing strategic planning initiatives, customer service approaches, corporate retreats, performance appraisal systems, team building and customized seminars on a variety of topics. She has a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, plus extensive training in organizational problem solving from the University of Buffalo and from Synectics, Inc. in Cambridge, Mass.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities, such as administratively hosting the Institute.
