Press Release

Public Invited to Learn More About the Workings of Investigative Studies at FGCU's First "Research Day"

FORT MYERS, FL - For the first time in its history, Florida Gulf Coast University is hosting a Research Day on Friday, April 26, to draw attention to the array of research-sponsored activities taking place at FGCU. President of the Council on Undergraduate Research, Michael E. Nelson, will speak at the event and serve as judge for one of the poster competitions. FGCU’s Fifth Annual Celebration of Excellence will conclude the event.

“The purpose of holding this event is to highlight and celebrate the efforts of many dedicated people and associated programs at FGCU,” director of Research and Sponsored Programs, Tom Roberts, said.

Roberts says the day will celebrate faculty and students’ hard work and accomplishments, and help in educating the general public to the primary difference between comprehensive universities and colleges, community colleges, technical schools and other educational organizations that do not engage in research activity.

Nelson is dean of Science and Allied Health at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. He is past president of the Kansas Academy of Science and a member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. In 1965, he received his B.S. from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and participated in an undergraduate research program as a geology major.

Nelson later received an A.M. from the University of South Dakota and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah where he was a NDEA Title IV Fellow. Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, and The Geological Society of America supported his doctoral research.

Planned events for the day include a poster competition on exhibit for public viewing from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., immediately followed by the Fifth Annual Celebration of Excellence to present a myriad of honors, including Faculty Scholarship Excellence awards, internal grants, employee awards and student awards. The ceremony will also include winners of the poster competition.

FGCU will grant one award valued at $1,000 in funding to one faculty/staff winner to help advance the winner’s scholarship activity. Each of FGCU’s five colleges will bestow $200 to student winners in various academic areas.
