Scholars Club Honors Southwest Florida's High Academic Achievers During Ceremony on May 4 in TECO

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Scholars Club invites the public to attend the 13th Annual Achievement Awards, Scholarship and Recognition Program 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4 in TECO Arena to recognize local minority and at-risk students in grades K-12 for excellence in leadership, community service and academic achievement.

During the event, Scholars Club awards $10,000 in scholarships to graduating high school students from Charlotte, Collier, Hendry and Lee counties and honors members such as Gino Casanova, valedictorian at Lehigh Senior High School accepted into Yale University. Casanova is the sixth member of Scholars Club in the last two years to also serve as school valedictorian.

Keynote speaker is president of Piney Woods School Charles H. Beady Jr. Piney Woods School, founded in 1909 near Jackson, Miss., is renown for helping disadvantaged students academically excel with a consistent success rate near 100 percent for number of graduates entering college.

President William C. Merwin and provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Brad Bartel will also speak.

A community-backed partnership between public schools and FGCU, Scholars Club helps to create a peer culture of academic success among at-risk students in grades K-12. Through innovative added curriculum and extracurricular school activities, the organization challenges students to academically shine and publicly recognizes achievements.

Scholars Club, headquartered in the FGCU College of Education, is a United Way agency and sponsored by the FGCU Foundation. Scholars Club helps nearly 2,000 students in 60 chapters throughout Southwest Florida, an increase of 45 percent in the last two years.

Scholars Club anticipates over 1,500 community members will attend the awards ceremony.
