FGCU Student Receives Degree in St. Petersburg; Attended Classes Via Internet

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University’s criminal justice program is awarding a bachelor’s degree Monday, May 6, in St. Petersburg to a student who attended all of his classes via distance learning made possible by an FGCU partnership with St. Petersburg College.

FGCU dean of the College of Professional Studies Johnny McGaha is attending commencement exercises to personally present Arthur Gaskey with the Bachelor of Science degree. Gaskey is a law enforcer in the St. Petersburg area.

“This student lives in the St. Pete area but finished up his degree via the Internet with us,” director of distance learning and extension services in the College of Professional Studies Peggy Bradley said. “This was possible through our articulation agreement with SPC and our collaboration with the University Partnership Center there.”

An articulation agreement with the University Partnership Center of St. Petersburg College gives students immediate access to the FGCU criminal justice program via the Internet.

“Currently we have approximately 25 students in our criminal justice program from the St. Pete area who take our distance learning courses,” Bradley said.

FGCU also offers a bachelor’s degree in legal studies, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health sciences through the St. Petersburg College UPC, which is the first of its kind in Florida and one of only a handful nationwide.

In addition, FGCU plans to offer the Master’s in Public Administration through the UPC beginning this fall.

UPC students may participate in both the partner university’s commencement as well as St. Petersburg College graduation activities. St. Petersburg College created the UPC to make four-year degrees more accessible and to better train the Pinellas County workforce.
