Attorney Morris Accepts General Counsel Post

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University selected Wendy S. Morris of Ponte Vedra Beach to the position of general counsel to the University.

“The inaugural position of FGCU general counsel is an important one and Wendy Morris is uniquely qualified for it,” President William C. Merwin said. “Her experience in higher education at the state and university levels in Florida, including with human resources and labor relations, will be an asset to our institution, especially during this time of increased devolution to the universities and their boards of trustees.”

FGCU general counsel reports to the President and represents the University as its chief legal officer. General counsel advises University administrators regarding interpretation and application of various federal and state laws, rules and regulations, and assists in the preparation of University rules and regulations.

General counsel serves as a liaison between the University and the University Board of Trustees in litigation and provides advice to the FGCU Foundation.

Morris is currently associate general counsel at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Previously, Morris was counsel to the Florida Board of Regents in human resources and labor relations from 1996 to 1999, assistant attorney general in civil litigation from 1994 to 1996, and assistant attorney general in criminal appeals from 1991 to 1994.

Morris earned a Juris Doctorate from Florida State University in 1991 and a Bachelor of Arts in English with honors from Rutgers University in New Jersey in 1988.

For more information, contact Morris at (904) 620-2828 or special assistant to the President Susan Evans at (941) 590-1057.
