Estero's Shepard Chosen to Fill Dean Position

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University recently selected Joseph Shepard of Estero to the position of dean of Student Affairs.

“FGCU is delighted that Dr. Shepard is our new dean of Student Affairs,” provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Brad Bartel says. “He brings a wealth of experience to the position. Over the years at our University, he has worked diligently with students, staff and faculty to create a caring environment for our students.

Since coming to FGCU in 1995, Shepard held the titles of interim dean of Student Affairs, associate dean of Student Services, assistant dean of Student Services and adjunct professor.

“With our dynamic enrollment growth, construction of student-related facilities such as new residence halls and our student union, and the growth of athletics, I know Dr. Shepard will produce new and innovative approaches to student life on our campus,” Bartel says.

As dean, Shepard is responsible for all matters related to services, programs, policies and activities that affect the personal, cultural and general welfare of students outside of the classroom. Other duties include supervising administrative, budgetary and accountability functions of the division of Student Affairs.

In addition, the dean coordinates development of student involvement, is a liaison for students in student matters and is responsible for ensuring programs are designed to enhance student self-development in preparing them for life and living, as well as making a living.

From 1990 to 1995, Shepard was employed at the University of North Texas in Denton, and from 1987 to 1990, he held positions at the Colegio Americano de Torreón in Torreón, México. He was assistant editor directing financial reporting at the Buckeye Valley News in Buckeye, Ariz., from 1984 to 1987.

Shepard earned a Ph.D. in public administration from Florida International University, a master’s degree in business administration/finance and banking from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Science in math education from Northern Arizona University.
