Hillmyer-Tremont Foundation Partners with FGCU to Host First Tip-off Tournament

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics Director Carl McAloose announced today the Hillmyer-Tremont Student Athlete Foundation partnered with FGCU to host the Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-off Tournament, Nov. 22-23 at TECO Arena. The men’s tournament includes the inaugural basketball game for FGCU.

“The Hillmyer-Tremont Foundation was founded to continue a tradition of recognition and assistance to local student-athletes, in particular assistance with higher education,” Foundation Chairman Sam Crimaldi says. “With the birth of FGCU, the natural evolution for our Foundation was to become an active partner with the University. The strong leadership we have seen at the University so far just reinforces this.”

The tournament begins with perennial NCAA DII power Florida Southern College playing Concordia (Minn.) at 4 p.m. The FGCU women’s team plays their first contest vs. Ohio Dominican at 6 p.m., while the FGCU men’s team hosts Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 8 p.m.

The Hillmyer-Tremont Foundation will join with FGCU to host a women’s tip-off tournament beginning in 2003.

“We are thrilled to be associated with the Monk (Hillmyer), Coach (Elmer) Tremont and the Hillmyer-Tremont Foundation,” McAloose says. “These two gentleman have been a huge influence on the growth of basketball in Southwest Florida. The Foundation has already been a big influence on the growth of basketball at Florida Gulf Coast University. This partnership will enable us to host one of the top tip-off tournaments in the country.”

The Hillmyer-Tremont Foundation already supported the athletics department with a $100,000 gift matched by state dollars and pledged an additional gift of $20,000 for athletic awards. Both Tremont and Hillmyer have demonstrated a love for amateur athletics and particularly basketball at all levels. Tremont is in the Florida High School Coach’s Hall of Fame for Basketball and coached a number of sports.

“We are glad to have an opportunity to be part of all the wonderful things we feel the University is accomplishing,” Hillmyer says. “We certainly recognize the difficulty in starting from scratch and we feel privileged to help FGCU get over the initial hurdles. We feel FGCU is doing a great job of balancing local youth, academics and athletics. I think the community at large recognized this as well and that we are seeing the overall support.”

“It is exciting having the Hillmyer-Tremont name attached to this outstanding tournament and the first games for FGCU,” Tremont says. “We definitely feel honored to be associated with the University as well as the tournament. Having coached local high school students for over 40 years, I am especially excited about the opportunities for our local kids that the whole athletic program will provide.”

FGCU’s women’s team will face Missouri Valley College at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, the Hillmyer-Tremont consolation game will be played at 4 p.m. and the championship game at 8 p.m.
