New Gerontology Course Teaches Compassionate Approaches in Communication

FORT MYERS, FL - Professionals in healthcare, human services, social work and law enforcement will benefit from a new course offered this fall “Caregiving and Communication with Older Adults” from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays starting Aug. 26 at Florida Gulf Coast University. The course concludes Dec. 9.

The three-hour credit undergraduate course is open to non-degree seeking individuals such as those who work with older adults in home health settings, long-term care and other health care or social services, as well as FGCU students. There are no prerequisites.

The course teaches techniques and approaches to compassionately communicate with diverse older adults in various cultures and settings, and the principles, concepts and processes of communication with older adults, including those with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.

FGCU developed the course in response to the results of a needs assessment report, surveys and focus groups that identified this area of study as one of the most critical for individuals who care for older adults.

The course is part of the Interdisciplinary Gerontology Education for Underserved Areas grant, funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health Professions.

FGCU instructor Pamela Haisman will teach the course. She is a nationally-recognized educator in gerontology, particularly for her expertise in teaching professional and family caregivers about communicating with compassion and enhancing caregiving of older adults.

Haisman earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Master of Science in health services administration from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill.
