Two FGCU Professors Win Grant Awards from USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently awarded individual $75,000 research grants to FGCU biotechnology professors Takashi Ueda, Ph.D., and Marilyn Cruz-Alvarez, Ph.D.

Ueda’s two-year project will study the Regulation and Function of 1-Cys Peroxiredoxin in Buckwheat. Peroxiredoxins are antioxidant enzymes found in various organisms, from bacteria to humans. Scientists believe the enzymes have evolved to protect organisms against detrimental cellular oxidative damages caused by stressful environmental conditions.

The long-term objective of Cruz-Alvarez’s study Preliminary Studies on a Putative Novel Transmembrane Receptor from Brassica oleracea is to attain a better understanding of the genetic differences among cultivated Brassica oleracea varieties which include common vegetables like Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower, beneficial in the diet because of their health-promoting and anti-cancer chemical compounds.

This material is based upon work supported by the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under Agreement Number 2002-35304-12498.
