"Environmental Literature" Class Offered on Sanibel Island

FORT MYERS, FL - The Renaissance Academy of Florida Gulf Coast University is offering “Environmental Literature,” a four-part, non-credit series at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 5 at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation.

The course will follow FGCU’s distinctive learning goal for students to learn an ecological perspective and to consider what it means for everyone as citizens of the Western Everglades ecosystem.

The class will explore engagement with place, or the ways people become committed to places and the meaning of their commitment.

Participants may wish to read the class books in advance, particularly Milkweed Editions’ The Book of the Everglades edited by Susan Cerulean.

Other books to be used include Ecology of a Cracker Childhood by Janice Ray and Writing the Sacred into the Real by Alison Hawthorne Deming.

Professor of environmental studies and environmental education Peter Blaze Corcoran will teach the class. He is an internationally recognized leader in the field of environmental education.

Classes are 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, 3333 Sanibel-Captiva Rd. on Sanibel Island. Cost of the class is $40.

FGCU created the Renaissance Academy on the premise that learning should never stop and that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively and culturally active fundamentally enhances the quality of life.

As part of FGCU’s commitment to serving the Southwest Florida region, the Renaissance Academy offers courses both on campus and at off-site locations.
