"Building Influence Through Assertiveness" Workshop Offered by FGCU Florida Institute of Government

FORT MYERS, FL - Managers and supervisors from both the private and public sectors are invited to attend a one-day workshop “Building Influence Through Assertiveness” presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of its Professional Development Series from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 11 at the FGCU Broadcast Building Room 111.

The workshop will teach participants how to have more confidence in themselves and their professional relationships, and how to speak up with sound ideas or suggestions.


     The difference between assertive, aggressive, passive and passive-aggressive styles

     What it really means to build rapport

     To choose behaviors that are effective for you given the situation

     How to communicate with authority

     Several assertive skills

     To deal more effectively with manipulative people

     To develop strategies to improve your self-esteem

Jackie Ferguson is instructor for the program. She is a human resource development training consultant, a licensed therapist and founder of InterAction Associates, a management development and human relations training firm where she designs and facilitates programs for businesses, education and government.

With a master’s degree in community counseling/psychology, Ferguson has over 17 years experience in public speaking and training, and has authored audiotapes on stress management, self-esteem and dealing effectively with guilt.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance.

As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as administratively hosting the Institute.
