Florida Institute of Government Offers Full Day of Professional Development Workshops

FORT MYERS, FL - Managers and employees from both the private and public sectors are invited to attend two, three-hour courses “Emotional Intelligence - EQ” at 8:30 a.m. and “Building Trusting Relationships in the Workplace” at 1 p.m. presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of the its Professional Development Series Friday, April 25 at the FGCU Broadcast Building Room 111.

“Emotional Intelligence-EQ” will contrast the workplace of today from the one of the past. Because increased emphasis is placed on the importance of relationship building both internally and externally in successful organizations, participants will learn concepts to become more effective managers.

Workshop objectives include: Discuss the seven categories of emotions, be more intentional in actions, listen to emotions for better decision making, use energy and enthusiasm to motivate others, define emotional intelligence and reasons why it is important to success, care and build trust by displaying sensitivity and concern, and recognize the five competencies which build your EQ level

“Building Trusting Relationships in the Workplace” will address how today’s employees are looking for more than just a paycheck. Employees want to be respected for their skills, creativity and contribution to the organization, and to feel good about their job and workplace. The amount of trust between all levels of the organization is a critical component of any successful workplace and the quality of life within the place of work can deteriorate quickly when people feel that their work and contributions are not valued.

Workshop objectives include: Understand the importance of trust and that earning it is often a function of time; increase trust level based on honesty, fairness and being forthright with staff; prepare employees to be successful through open communication and collaboration; share knowledge openly and freely; delegate both responsibility and authority for projects through empowerment; utilize constant and immediate feedback; and understand the dynamics and consequences of both trust and deception

David G. Kelley is instructor for the program. He is an ordained United Methodist minister and the founder and former pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Coral, a Florida-licensed marriage and family therapist, and a licensed mediator for the state of Florida. He has been a trainer for the Institute of Government for more than 15 years.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance.

As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as administratively hosting the Institute.
