Two FGCU Summer Activities Team Up With USDA Food Service Program to Benefit Eligible Children

FORT MYERS, FL - One hundred school children in the five-county area will have fun-filled, educational opportunities at Florida Gulf Coast University this summer during two activities sponsored by the College Reach Out Program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

Forty students in 10th and 11th grades will have the opportunity to experience college life for one week beginning June 1 in CROP’s Summer Residential Program.

Participants from Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties who meet CROP eligibility requirements will be selected to live in residence halls, attend classes, complete a special project and visit other state institutions through June 7. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided.

Sixty students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades, who meet CROP eligibility requirements, will attend a six-week Summer Institute weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 16 through July 25.

Mondays through Thursdays, students will study academics with a focus on math, language arts and technology with a specific emphasis on FACT and Florida Writes. On Fridays, students will have an educational field trip experience. Lunch will be provided for the entire program.

FGCU is combining both activities with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, the single largest federal resource available to feed hungry children when the school year has ended.

The Summer Food Service Program () is similar to the national School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. It provides nutritionally balanced meals to needy children regardless of race, color, creed, sex, handicap, age or national origin during summer vacation, when school breakfasts and lunches are not available.

Each child must submit an Income Eligibility Application. The family size and income is then compared with the Income Guidelines established by the USDA.
