"Writing Job Instructions" Workshop Offered by FGCU Florida Institute of Government

FORT MYERS, FL - Managers and supervisors from both the private and public sectors are invited to attend a one-day workshop “Writing Job Instructions” presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of its Professional Development Series 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 8 in 111 Broadcast Building.

Participants will learn the tools to write procedures for carrying out various daily tasks, including business and technical tasks.

     Analyze the audience and tailor writing to the reader

     Recognize appropriate style, structure and sequence of information

     Determine which of five types of writing best matches the reader’s needs

     Write effective procedures in the appropriate style based on number of persons performing the task and degree of complexity

     Edit writing to ensure instructions are understandable, complete and accurate

Jim Jacoby is instructor for the program. He has more than 30 years experience in communications management for several Fortune 500 companies and has owned his own consulting business since 1977. His expertise is business writing, specializing in assisting organizations with policies and procedures.

Currently, Jacoby is an adjunct at FGCU and two colleges, and conducts in-house training at numerous organizations in Florida, Minnesota and Oklahoma. The author of a textbook and many publications, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Pennsylvania State University.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance.

As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as administratively hosting the Institute.
