Early Childhood Leadership Summit Invites Participants

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will host the Early Childhood Leadership Summit 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5 in the Student Union Ballroom for the community of Southwest Florida to learn more about special education services for children five and younger. On-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

“This event is an opportunity for the region’s early childhood community to share resources, network and participate in a simulation of what families experience when searching for early childhood special education services,” assistant project coordinator for the Southwest Florida Comprehensive System of Personnel Development Peg Sullivan said.

The CSPD’s Professional Development Partnership is sponsoring the event and a General Supervision Enhancement Grant through the Florida Department of Health and Florida Department of Education is funding it.

Individuals in the five county region who are in decision-making roles with agencies, programs, initiatives or associations concerned with services and support to young children and their families are invited to attend, as are family members in leadership roles or interested in assuming leadership roles.

The Summit will showcase current activities and initiatives in the region, build awareness of GSEG activities and state priorities, and give participants a chance to get acquainted and exchange information and ideas, as well as help plan the winter Early Childhood Innovation Institute.

Wendy Cheyney of Florida International University and the Miami-Dade School Readiness Coalition will deliver the morning keynote address. Florida Department of Health officials will attend as special guests.

The afternoon agenda includes a simulation “Navigating the Resource Maze” developed at the University of Oregon. The simulation will provide participants with information about local resources while considering if access to the resources is parent-friendly.

Lunch will be provided for full-day registrants.
